You may also call or text 988 or 741-741 to receive mental health crisis support.
Below is a brief summary of what is an emergency, urgency, or a non-emergency situation. You are welcome to call CAPS, 402.554.2409, to determine the best course of action.
Emergency
An emergency is defined as a life-threatening situation and requires an immediate intervention or response. You do not need to wait for an appointment in this situation.
Examples of an emergency include, but are not limited to:
- Suicidal/homicidal thoughts
- Intent, or plans, or life-threatening behaviors
The nearest emergency room would also be a resource in this instance.
- If you'd like assistance from a counselor, you may come to CAPS in 101 H&K Monday through Friday from 8 A.M. to 5 P.M.
- On weekends, please immediately contact Public Safety at 402.554.2911, call 911, or go to the nearest hospital.
Urgency
An urgent situation is a non-life threatening, immediate situation where a student may feel psychologically or emotionally overwhelmed.
Examples of an urgent situation include, but are not limited to:
- Grief and loss of significant people or relationships
- severe stress or anxiety over academic challenges
- intense feelings of sadness and lack of motivation without thoughts of suicide
- Experiencing a recent traumatic event (e.g., a crime, natural disaster, sexual or physical assault)
- Feeling persistently unsafe, a sense of impending doom or danger
- Currently living without food, clothing, and/or shelter
- Unable to care for yourself, such as not eating or sleeping for several days
- Having withdrawal symptoms from drugs or alcohol (call 911 for medical assistance).
- Experiencing uncontrollable panic and unable to calm down
If a student is in an urgent situation, they should call or visit CAPS to schedule an appointment at the earliest availability.
