NU Flex Benefits Overview
The University medical, dental and vision plans are three separate plans.
- Employees can choose to enroll in all or some of the plans.
- Employees can also enroll different dependents in different plans.
- Employees must be enrolled in a plan in order to enroll dependents.

Holidays
Overview
UNO participates in the University of Nebraska System holiday schedule; published on the University of Nebraska site. The full holiday policy can be found within the University Employee Handbook.
Eligible* employees are defined as employees in an active employment status, meaning:
- Must hold a regularly budgeted position (either hourly or salaried).
- Note: If you are part-time (less than 1.0 FTE (full time equivalency), you would receive a pro-rata of paid holidays equal to your (FTE) full time equivalency status.
- Inactive or unpaid leave of absence employees are not eligible (only exception is FMLA).
- Temporary positions are not eligible. Paid wages would only apply for time worked.
Holidays - UNO closes its doors of operation, per the University of Nebraska holiday schedule, (schedule link referenced above). Paid holidays for eligible* employees can be determined by the description next to the day listed (on the holiday schedule); the description will not include the language ‘in Lieu of’.
- Note: Essential employees who work on a holiday shall be granted a compensatory hour off for each hour worked, & should be tracked by the employee and your supervisor. The compensatory time granted must be used within the immediate 12 month period.
Floating Holidays – UNO additionally recognizes, per the University of Nebraska holiday schedule (schedule link referenced above), floating holidays. UNO remains in operation on floating holidays. Floating holidays can be recognized (on the holiday schedule); the description will include the language ‘in Lieu of’. Eligible* employees can choose one of the following:
- Elect to take the floating holiday off with pay (per the designated date on the holiday schedule).
- Choose to work that day (your floating holiday balance would remain unused).
- Choose to work that day (for use on an alternate date of observance important to you).
- Choose to work that day, alternatively saving the paid floating holiday to be used as a compensated day during the UNO holiday closedown period. The UNO holiday closedown period can be found on the academic calendar.
Closedown Period – UNO closes its doors of operation for the holiday closedown annually. Generally, most eligible* employees elect to save a portion of their accrued leave balances (either floating holidays or vacation), in order to be compensated for the days (other than designated holidays) during the closedown period. Without sufficient leave balances, those closedown dates would be unpaid. Please refer (to the information above) regarding essential employees, and please refer (to the section below) for the day before and after requirement to receive holiday pay.
To receive holiday pay - The eligible* employee must be in paid status on their scheduled workday before and after the holiday, meaning:
- Paid status is defined as working, or using unused, available leave balances of vacation, floating holiday, or sick leave balances.
- If a paid status is not reported on both sides of the holiday, that holiday would not be paid as a University holiday.
- Note: holiday pay refers to days deemed as holidays (per the holiday schedule link referenced above); this criteria is not required for floating holidays.
