Requesting an Extension
International students usually finish their program by the program end date on Form I-20. In some special cases, students can request an extension.
You may be eligible for an extension if you meet all the following criteria:
- You apply for your extension at least two weeks before the program end date on Form I-20. Please note extensions must be approved before the end date on the form to maintain a valid visa status.
- You have continually maintained your status.
- The extension is because of compelling academic or medical reasons beyond your control and verified by an academic advisor or medical professional. Examples include a significant change in research topic, unexpected research problems or a documented medical illness. Extensions for failing grades, academic probation or suspension will not be approved.
- You can provide a new Financial Affidavit Form and proof of finances for an additional semester or two.
How to Apply for an Extension
- Obtain a letter or email from your academic advisor recommending an extension and explaining why the extension is needed. It also must include a new program completion date.
- Complete and sign a new Financial Affidavit Form.
- Show updated proof of finances.
- Upload your academic advisor’s letter and financial documentation in iGlobal to apply for the extended I-20.
If the extension is approved, you must request a new Form I-20. Complete this step as soon as possible, as processing a new form may take some time.
