Maintaining Your Status
While studying in the United States, it is important to maintain your F or M student status. Your status relates to the purpose, or reason for why you want to come to the United States. The U.S. Department of State issues you your visa based on your intended purpose.

Guidelines to Maintaining Status (Students)
As a UNO international student, you must maintain your F-1 or J-1 visa nonimmigrant status and your dependent’s status (F-2 or J-2) in the U.S.
Requesting a Reduced Course Load
International students at UNO on F-1 or J-1 visa status are required by law to maintain full-time student status.
Leave of Absence, Suspension, or Withdrawal
International students who have an emergency and need to leave the U.S. can request a leave of absence if they plan to return to study.
Your Final Term
Congratulations on finishing your program at UNO! Prepare to transition to another program, travel back to your home country or transfer to another school.
Report Serious Situations (J-1)
The U.S. Department of State requires that any serious incident involving a J-1 student or scholar be reported to them by the International Programs office within 24 hours.
Reporting a Change of U.S. Address
Moving to a new place must include reporting any address change to international advising within 10 days to maintain your nonimmigrant status in the U.S.
Extending Your Program or Beginning a New Program
International students usually finish their program by the program end date on Form I-20. In some special cases, students can request an extension.
