College life is busy, and catching a cold can really slow you down. The good news is there are things you can do to reduce your risk of getting sick – and if you do catch a cold, there are ways to feel better fast.
Tips to prevent a cold
- Reduce the spread of germs
Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially before eating and after touching shared surfaces. If you can’t wash your hands, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. - Hydrate
Drinking enough water keeps your immune system strong. Aim to drink enough water to equal two-thirds of your body weight in ounces every day. - Stay rested
Sleeping seven to nine hours per night lets your body recover and protect against sickness.
What to do if you get a cold
- Self-isolate
Avoid being around other people for at least 24 hours after your fever and symptoms have resolved to reduce the risk of infecting others. Some symptoms like cough and runny nose may continue after your fever resolves. Wear a mask and cover your cough when you are in public. - Manage your symptoms
Stock up on over-the-counter supplies to help alleviate your symptoms. Read all labels and packaging carefully and only take medications as directed. Consult with a medical professional before taking multiple medications. - Know when to ask for help
If symptoms worsen or persist for more than 10 days, check in with a health care professional. Seek emergency medical care if your symptoms are severe (chest pain, shortness of breath, persistently high fever of over 102 F, etc.).
