Let’s kick the awkwardness to the curb and chat about the importance of understanding your sexual and reproductive health.
According to the American Sexual Health Association, 1 in 2 people will contract a sexually transmitted infection (STI) by age 25. Some STIs have no symptoms or mild signs that can easily be overlooked, which is why it’s important to get tested regularly if you are sexually active.
Taking care of your sexual and reproductive health begins with getting to know your body through regular physical exams. An annual physical gives you a chance to ask your doctor questions, get tested for STIs, and get healthy lifestyle tips about your diet, exercise routine, safer sex and more.
Be prepared to be open and honest with your doctor throughout your annual exam so they can provide the best care possible for your needs. Your provider is there to help you, not judge you. What you share about your sexual health will also help your doctor choose the most appropriate STI tests for your circumstances, as your risk factors will determine which tests are most important for you.
Although you may have an established relationship with your pediatrician, now is the time to transition to a family medicine provider, preferably one specializing in college health like those at UNO Health Center.
