With new classes, friendships and responsibilities, transitioning from home life to campus is a big change. An important part of this transition is managing your health. This guide is designed to help you take control of your health while on campus.
Find the Health Center
Make a trip to the UNO Health Center during your first few days on campus, even if you aren’t sick. This way, you’ll know exactly where to go if you ever need to visit. The health center is conveniently located in room 102, inside the Health and Kinesiology building (6001 Dodge St., Omaha, NE 68182).
Build a first-aid kit
Stock up on over-the-counter essentials like pain relievers, cold medicine, bandages and more to build a first-aid kit. Having these items in your room or backpack can help you manage common illnesses and injuries without rushing to the store.
Mental Health is Important
Adjusting to a new environment can be stressful, and your mental health is as important as your physical health. The UNO Health Center psychiatric staff provides evaluation, education and medication management for depression, anxiety, insomnia, schizophrenia and more. Our campus partners, Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), also offer a variety of resources to help you navigate challenges like homesickness, anxiety, or academic stress.
Prioritize Sleep
Not getting enough sleep can cause a lack of concentration and a weakened immune system. Here are some tips for better sleep:
- Get up and go to bed at the same time every day.
- Use a calming bedtime routine (like yoga, meditation or reading a book) to prepare your body and mind for sleep.
- Create a dark, cool and relaxed environment.
- Exercise regularly, preferably earlier in the day.
- Get exposure to light in the daytime.
