Omaha – Nebraska citizens looking to explore the world of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) are welcome to the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) on Saturday, April 26, for “Nebraska Science Festival on Campus,” a daylong event with hands-on learning opportunities for one of the world’s fastest growing career areas.
As part of this year’s Nebraska Science Festival, UNO’s Office of STEM Education is teaming with the University of Nebraska Medical Center, University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the Boy Scouts of America for this special event, which runs from 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. across the UNO campus.
During the day, experts from each of the STEM fields of study will be on hand to conduct workshops for families. Topics will include everything from “Math Magic” to aviation and chemistry.
From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. there will be free, hands-on stations presented by the UNO College of Education in a format reminiscent of the science expos from the early 20th century. At the expo, visitors can rotate between a variety of activities including straw rockets, creating a balsa wood plane and guiding robots.
Those wishing to participate in the expo are asked t o register online at http://form.jotform.us/form/40206675883157
This year’s Nebraska Science Fest runs from Thursday, April 24, through Saturday, April 26, and is dedicated to stimulating the curiosity and exciting the minds of children and adults by engaging them in the amazing world of science.
As one of UNO’s key educational priority areas, STEM education is central to the UNO curriculum, whether it be through students utilizing the Math Lab, programming robots at the University of Nebraska Peter Kiewit Institute or hosting camps designed to engage young girls to participate in STEM-focused careers.
