Omaha – * NOTE: Updates Have Been Made To Reflect Enaction of the Inclement Weather Plan *
More than 1,500 University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) students will soon join the 100,000 other members of the UNO alumni network as we are set to host our May 2014 Commencement ceremonies, held on Friday, May 9, and Saturday, May 10.
This year’s ceremony will once again be held on the UNO campus, featuring a formal conferring of degrees on Friday, May 9, and individual college convocation ceremonies taking place on Saturday, May 10.
Admission is free and open to each of the commencement ceremonies on May 9 and May 10. Family and friends are encouraged to attend and celebrate the accomplishments of this year’s graduating class.
Conferral of Degrees – May 9
The university-wide conferral of degrees will take place at 6 p.m. in UNO’s Sapp Fieldhouse and celebrate the academic careers of UNO’s graduating undergraduates, graduate students and doctoral students.
Speakers at Friday’s conferral of degrees include UNO Chancellor John Christensen and University of Nebraska Regent Hal Daub, as well as student speakers from UNO’s undergraduate and graduate student body.
The ceremony will also feature the presentation of two awards: the Citiation for Alumni Achievement and the Chancellor’s Medal.
This year’s recepient of the UNO Citation for Alumni Achievement, presented by the UNO Alumni Association, is internationally known physicist and astronomer Dr. Penny Sackett. Sackett is a 1978 summa cum laude graduate of UNO who served as Chief Scientist for Australia from 2008 to 2011. In 2005, she helped discover the first-known Earth-sized planet orbiting a star other than the sun.
This year’s Chancellor’s Medal will be presented to Joe Kaminski, director of UNO Campus Recreation and a UNO alumnus. Kaminski helped oversee the design and construction of the 2010 renovations of UNO’s Health, Physical Education and Recreation building.
