UNO Student Earns Fulbright Scholarship, Will Teach in Turkey

Omaha – A University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) student will be teaching English in Turkey beginning in August after receiving a highly competitive Fulbright Scholarship.

Shelby Anderson-Holt, an International Studies major, will represent the U.S. as a cultural ambassador while overseas, helping to enhance the mutual understanding between Americans and Turkish citizens.

While in Turkey, Anderson-Holt will teach English full time as an English Teach Assistant.

As part of her International Studies major, Anderson-Holt has a concentration in Middle East Studies as well as International Nonprofit Management and Leadership. She is also minoring in Islamic Studies.

The Fulbright trip will be Anderson-Holt’s second visit to the country. In 2013 she spent two weeks as a UNO student representative at Ataturk University in the city of Erzurum.

Each year, approximately 1,600 grants are awarded to U.S. students to research, teach or study in one of 155 designated countries.

Earlier this year Angela Eikenberry, associate professor of public administration, was awarded a Fulbright scholarship to conduct research in the United Kingdom during the 2014-2015 academic year.

Over the last 10 years, UNO has had seven students receive Fulbright scholarships with the last one coming in 2011.
