The Omaha hockey team has been picked to finish sixth in its second season in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference. The conference’s annual preseason poll was announced in advance of the NCHC Media Day which is being held today at the Target Center in Minneapolis.
The Mavericks received 73 points in the voting by 25 members of local and national media who cover the eight schools in the conference.
North Dakota was chosen to finish first in the poll, receiving 12 first-place votes and 181 points in the voting. Miami was chosen second with nine first-place votes and 167 points, and St. Cloud State, last year’s inaugural regular season champion, was picked third with four first-place votes and 151 points.
Denver, last year’s playoff champion, was chosen fourth with 117 points, just ahead of Minnesota Duluth with 112 points. Following the Mavericks, Western Michigan was picked seventh with 67 points and Colorado College was chosen eighth with 32 points. The full results of the poll are below.
Last season, the Mavericks were chosen to finish last in the NCHC’s first season but surprised by finishing third with a record of 13-9-2-1.
Omaha opens the season on Monday, Oct. 6 with an exhibition game against the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology at 7:07 p.m. at the CenturyLink Center. The Mavericks are back on the ice that weekend when they host Minnesota State on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 10-11.
