It was a special year for UNO in 2014 with countless events, achievements, special guest visits and national recognitions for students, faculty, staff and alumni.
In April the Gateway, UNO's student-run newspaper, celebrated it's 100th anniversary. Since its inception, the paper has provided an outlet for student opinion, the creation of original content by students of various majors, and the coverage of university happenings.
"UNO Student Newspaper Celebrates 100 Years"
April 2014
The Gateway has been UNO’s source of news and opinion for students, faculty and alumni since 1913. The anniversary celebration commemorated the paper’s achievements over the past 100 years and honored the contributions of the paper’s previous staff members.
Displays at the event included editions of the paper from each decade. Additionally, past and present editors, professional advisers and Publication Board members shared their experiences.
A special 100-year edition of the Gateway was published prior to the event.
Beginning in 1913 as a yearbook, the Gateway provided a companion to the student-run daily YELLow Sheet publication until 1922 when the Gateway became a weekly publication and served as the sole publication issued by the UNO student body.
During its time as a UNO publication, the Gateway has covered a number of major UNO events including the merger of Omaha University into the University of Nebraska system, the construction of new buildings, the hiring of new chancellors and UNO’s move to Division I athletics.
