We asked Bernadette, Pablo, Sun Pro, and Paw about TRIO Project Achieve. Read what they had to say:

Meet Bernadette

Bernadette

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I’m a pre-med student majoring in psychology, and I’m the oldest of seven, which definitely keeps life interesting! Originally from Africa, I have a diverse cultural background that shapes my perspective on health and wellness.

Tell us about your major and how you became interested in it.

I chose psychology because I’ve always been fascinated by the human mind and behavior. Understanding mental health is crucial, especially as I pursue a career in medicine. My experiences growing up in a large family have also deepened my interest in how relationships and environments impact mental well-being.

Tell us something fun about yourself.

One of my favorite hobbies is crocheting! It’s a great way for me to unwind, and I love creating unique pieces. It’s both relaxing and rewarding to see my ideas come to life through yarn.

What do you like most about Project Achieve?

What I appreciate most about Project Achieve is its focus on building community and providing support. It creates a space where students can connect, share experiences, and help each other succeed academically and personally. It’s great to be part of a program that values collaboration and growth.

Meet Pablo

pablo_perez_resized.jpg

Tell a bit about yourself.

My name is Pablo Perez and I am a first-generation college student. I am working on getting my journalism degree and a minor in business.

What are you planning to do after graduating?

I am planning to run a video provider business, like shooting weddings, parties, and any other special events for people that want a nice video; however, I will initially need to secure a job to help me fund my business needs.

What do you want to be doing 10 years from now?

In 10 years, I want to have a successful business with my own staff and share the business with my sister Paola. We both aspire to be our own bosses, and I hope that a decade is enough time for us to set our plans in motion.

How has Project Achieve impacted you?

Project Achieve has helped me a lot when it comes to finding opportunities. They always reach out and notify us about internships or other volunteer work that can help my resume. I also get a lot of help from them. The staff has been very caring and very patient with me.

Meet Sun Pro

sun pro_htoo.jpg

Tell us a bit about yourself.

My name is Sun Pro Htoo. I was born in a refugee camp in Thailand and spent half of my life there before immigrating to the United States at the age of 9. My parents wanted my siblings and me to have access to better education so we could pursue our dreams and goals. I’m currently a second-year undergraduate student at UNO, pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Health and Kinesiology on a pre-health track. I’m passionate about entering the health field because I love helping people feel happy and improving their lives. Another reason I want to go into healthcare is that I want to give back to my Karen community. I’ve noticed that when my parents go to doctor appointments, there’s often a language barrier between them and the physician, and I want to help bridge that gap.

What do you like to do in your free time?

In my free time, I like to go on runs and spend time with my family. Running is important to me because it allows me to connect with nature and appreciate the beauty of the planet we live on. Spending time with my family is something I value the most because we’re all so busy during the week with school, work, and daily routines. Quality family time is important to me, and I enjoy making the most of it whenever we can.

What do you want to be doing 10 years from now?

Ten years from now, I see myself working in the healthcare field, specifically as a Physician Assistant in family medicine. I’m passionate about working with families and children, and I believe family medicine is an area where I can build strong relationships with patients. Not only will I get to treat families, but also have the opportunity to truly get to know them over time.

How has Project Achieve impacted you?

Project Achieve has impacted me in many ways. When I came to UNO as a freshman, it was a very new environment compared to high school, and I felt lost regarding what opportunities were available to me. However, with the help of my Project Achieve advisor and peer mentors, I was able to find things that interested me, such as joining clubs and meeting new people. I’m very grateful to be a part of Project Achieve because it has made my life as a college student easier and more exciting. Through this program, I’ve joined several clubs, such as the Habitat for Humanity and the Student Against Hunger clubs. These clubs have been a lot of fun, and I’ve enjoyed giving back to the community while meeting other members and making new friends.

Meet Paw

paw_htee.jpg

Can you tell me a bit about yourself?

My name is Paw Htee, and I am currently a second-year undergraduate at UNO pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree. While I am still undecided on my concentration, I am leaning toward marketing and international business. As a refugee who immigrated from Thailand, I’m passionate about helping my community through volunteering, fundraising, and supporting local businesses. In my free time, I enjoy watching movies and going on walks to sight see.

What are you planning to do after graduating?

After graduation, my goal is to find a job in marketing or international business, whether that's with a company or a nonprofit organization. I would love to travel the world and immerse myself in different global cultures. I believe this will not only enrich my personal experience but also provide valuable insights that can help businesses grow, contribute to the economy, and drive technological innovation. It may also give me a chance to advocate and impact people in refugee camps. As for now, this area of business is the potential career path in which I plan on specializing for my long-term goal.

What was it like for you to go from high school to college?

The transition from high school to college was nerve-wracking for me, especially as a first-generation student. The size of the institution felt overwhelming, and I knew it would require more independence and self-discipline. To prepare, I had to figure out how to navigate FAFSA, use new classroom tools and choose my own schedule. Thankfully, the TRIO program Upward Bound Math and Science, along with my academic advisors, provided me with guidance during the transition. I quickly realized that more freedom also means more responsibility. I learned to balance a busy schedule and spend more time studying outside the classroom. To help ease my financial concerns, I continued to apply for grants and scholarships. While school can be challenging at times, I am confident that the skills and knowledge I'm gaining will be crucial for my future career.

How has Project Achieve helped you?

Project Achieve (PA) has played a significant role in my college journey. The program provides a strong support system that keeps me motivated and accountable. I no longer feel alone, thanks to the advisors, mentors, and tutors who are always there to help. As a commuter, PA has allowed me to stay engaged on campus through various events, workshops, and student organizations like Habitat for Humanity and Benson Plant Rescue. Additionally, PA has given me opportunities to network, explore potential careers and attend leadership conferences. Overall, the student program helps me stay active in college and enhance my academic experience.
