Program of Study
Once a student has been admitted by the UNO Graduate School, the School of H&K, and the Athletic Training Program, they may begin taking courses and completing clinical education in athletic training. Any student that has prerequisites (“deficiencies”) to complete should arrange to take them as soon as possible during their academic studies at UNO. All students with deficiencies should meet with Dr. Adam Rosen (graduate advisor) to determine when these courses should be taken.
This is a full-time graduate program (including summers) and requires considerable clinical experience as part of the requirements for graduation. This program starts in the second summer session (mid-July). Students will obtain most of their clinical hours as part of the course requirements in the athletic training education program. Students will be expected to obtain clinical experience hours over six semesters (summer, fall, spring; 2 full years). Clinical experience does include some nights, weekends and travel. As the academic and clinical components of the ATP take considerable time, athletic training students are not eligible for graduate assistantships during their Graduate studies. However, there are opportunities for part-time employment and work-study through the School of H&K, Campus Recreation, and other departments on campus. Students interested in these opportunities should contact Dr. Adam Rosen for more information.
Each course within the Graduate ATP is designed to build off the knowledge in prior courses. In addition, the “hands-on” clinical skills (proficiencies) are evaluated in a specific order during each course. Therefore, the classes in the Graduate ATP must be taken in a specific sequence. The coursework cannot be completed in less than 2 full academic years. Students that have prior graduate degrees may be able to transfer non-clinical coursework to the Graduate ATP. These decisions are made by Dr. Adam Rosen, and the Graduate Program Committee in the School of H&K.

All graduate students must maintain a cumulative and major GPA of at least 3.0 to stay in good academic standing. Students may not earn more than 1 grade of “C” or “C+” during their graduate studies (students admitted provisionally may not earn any grade less than “B” during the first 12 credit hours). No graduate student may earn a grade lower than “C”. Failure to maintain these academic standards may result in probation, suspension, or removal from the graduate program. Students are encouraged to read the Student Manual for the UNO ATP for more information on these policies.
Students are also evaluated twice each semester on clinical performance. Students will be evaluated in terms of academic and clinical skills, reliability, productivity, communication skills and progression of athletic training competencies and proficiencies each semester. Failure to meet standards may result in probation, suspension or dismissal from the athletic training program. Students are encouraged to read the Student Manual for the UNO ATP for more information on these policies.
