Communities of Practice (CoPs) are incentivized networks that support UNO’s Pillars of 1) Educating All Learners 2) Research and Discovery. These faculty-led groups meet at least three times throughout the academic year and support each other in implementing effective practices in teaching or scholarship. In 2024-25, CoP funding will support groups that address writing/research/creative activity, student success, and general education.
General Requirements
CoPs must have a minimum of three members and align with at least one of the following categories:
At the time of application, CoPs must detail three expected outcomes and expected members, including facilitator and members' units and email addresses. Applications must be completed via Qualtrics by the stated due date posted on CFE’s website. To be eligible for CoP end-of-year funding, members must be full-time faculty. CoPs may include members who are not full-time UNO faculty, but those members will not be eligible for funds through CFE.
At the conclusion of the academic year, CoP facilitators must submit a report 1) attesting that each member to be paid attended three or more CoP meetings and 2) documenting the completion of one of the requirements listed below. To receive funding, each CoP member’s achievements must be included in the report.

Pay:
Individuals may participate in or facilitate as many CoPs as desired, but can only receive compensation for one CoP.
Participants:- $100 paid as professional development funds
- 3-10 members: $150 paid as professional development funds
- 10+ members: $300 paid as professional development funds
Writing Accountability, Research, or Creative Activity CoP
To receive funding each member must attend at least three CoP meetings and document authoring/co-authoring one or more of the following during the academic year:
- Submitted or accepted manuscript, journal article, chapter, book proposal, or other academic/creative publication
- Submitted or accepted IRB proposal
- Submitted or accepted grant proposal (may be internal or external)
- Submitted or accepted conference presentation, performance, or exhibit
Documentation/evidence to support completion of this requirement can include an IRB#, academic citation, or performance/exhibit dates (other evidence may be considered, please email CFE for approval before submitting report).
Student Success CoP
To receive funding, each member must attend three or more CoP meetings and have evidence of at least one of the following activities during the academic year.
- Members identify a student success strategy implemented in an in-person, hybrid, or asynchronous class. Member-provided evidence includes:
- List of course(s) in which strategy was implemented.
- Brief (3-5 sentences) description/reflection on outcome.
- Members document active participation in the planning or delivery of an event attended by 20 or more students. Member-provided evidence includes:
- Title, date, and approximate attendance of the event.
- Brief (3-5 sentences) description/reflection on outcome.
- Members support a FUSE or GRACA project. Member-provided evidence includes:
- Title of project, type of project, and student name.
- Brief (3-5 sentences) description/reflection on outcome
- Members may participate in TABS or a Teaching Observation sponsored by UCAT.
- Attend the Paul Hanstedt lecture.
- There are many other possibilities. Please consult with the Director of the Center for Faculty Excellence to get approval for your activity.
General Education CoP
To receive funding, each CoP member must have attended at least three CoP meetings and complete one or more of the following activities during the academic year
- Attend one or more General Education Teaching Circles or Reading Groups.
- Attend the Paul Hanstedt lecture.
- Participate in a general education course or curriculum design workshop.
- Submit a general education course for review by the General Education Committee.
