This is general information about repeating courses. Every college has its own grade requirements for earning a degree. For specific information see your college advising office.
Undergraduate Repeat Courses: General Rule
When an undergraduate course is repeated, only the most recent grade will be calculated into the GPA.
- Letter-graded courses must be repeated for a letter grade.
- ALL courses and grades will continue to be a part of the student’s permanent record (transcript).
- When determining eligibility for honors for graduation, repeated courses and grades awarded in all courses taken at all colleges and universities attended are included in computing a Grade Point Average (GPA). Visit the Graduating with Honors page for more information.
- Once a degree is granted, repeated courses will not change the GPA established at the time the degree was awarded.
- Some courses may be an exception to the university repeat policy due to the type of courses they are. Such courses as thesis, internships, physical activity, special topics or independent study can be taken again for credit without removing the previous grade. For these undergraduate courses, only grades of F will be removed "automatically" when these courses are repeated. View a complete list of courses that can be repeated without removing the previous grade.
- Repeating the same course more than once may impact your financial aid eligibility. It is recommended that you contact the Office of Financial Support and Scholarships to discuss your eligibility for financial aid if you are repeating a course that you have previously completed with a grade of "D" or higher.

Undergraduate Special Exceptions: Manual Repeat Processing
Manual course repeat exception requests that meet course repeat criteria and are not marked as repeated courses via normal end of term repeat processing should be submitted by advisors using the Repeat Course Exceptions eForm (MavLINK > Staff > Forms > Repeat Exception eForm).
The Repeat Course Exceptions eForm should not be completed until the replacement course has been graded. Repeated/original courses are excluded from earned hours and are not able to be used as prerequisites. Please be sure those course hours will not be needed to complete degree requirements. Once the eForm has been completed and the repeat is added, it cannot be reversed and added back to the student's record later.
All special exceptions listed below require the Repeat Course Exceptions eForm to be submitted for manual repeat processing:
- UNL, UNK, and UNMC course equivalents
Students may replace grades earned at another University of Nebraska system campus if the equivalent course is taken at UNO. Students should consult with an advisor prior to enrolling in courses at UNO to ensure that the direct equivalent course is taken.
- If a student repeats a UNO course equivalent on the UNK, UNMC, or UNL campus, it will be necessary for the student to request that campus to issue an official transcript to UNO Admissions before the manual repeat processing can be completed.
- Repeated courses which were first taken prior to the Spring Semester 1986
- Late grades or grade changes done after the grading period
- Crosslisted/equivalent courses (i.e, MATH 1320/MATH 1300)
- Repeatable courses (EX: thesis, internships, physical activity, special topics or independent study) that were repeated
Graduate Repeat Courses: General Rule
A student, upon the consent of his or her advisor, may repeat a course in which he/she has previously received a grade of C+ (2.33 on a 4.0 scale) or below. Both grades will appear on the transcript, but only the second grade will be counted in determining the grade point average.
- Letter-graded courses must be repeated for a letter grade.
- ALL courses and grades will continue to be a part of the student's permanent record (transcript).
- Repeats must be completed before a degree is granted. Once a degree is granted, repeated courses will not change the GPA established at the time the degree was awarded.
